Welding points of titanium welded vessels

Apr 07, 2022

TIG welding with cerium tungsten electrode is required for titanium plate and titanium pipe of titanium welded vessel, its groove surface shall be free of cracks, delamination, inclusions, and other defects.

When the tungsten electrode touches the weld metal during welding, the welding shall be stopped immediately to remove the pollution layer. If necessary, the tip of the tungsten electrode can be polished before welding. Titanium has poor thermal conductivity and its melting point is 1668 ℃, Higher than steel and many other metals, metal intermediate compounds are formed in the molten state, resulting in embrittlement of welded joints, Therefore, titanium and steel can not be fusion welded. It is strictly prohibited to mix steel and other metals in the process of titanium fusion welding.

At the same time, titanium has strong reducibility under high-temperature melting and can react with a variety of elements and compounds. Therefore, when welding titanium plate and titanium pipe, the front of all welds and the back of a seam shall be protected by inert gas.

Welding operators shall meet the requirements of tungsten gas shielded welding of aluminum and aluminum alloy or titanium and titanium alloy. The welding environment has a great impact on the welding quality and joint performance. The welding shall be carried out in a smoke-free and dust-free independent environment. If steel equipment is used in the same workshop, isolation measures shall be taken to ensure that titanium plate and titanium pipe are not polluted by iron during welding.
