Titanium and titanium alloys

Sep 21, 2022

Titanium and its alloys are very suitable for use in aircraft, missiles, rockets, and other high-speed aircraft due to their low density (4.51g/cm3), high strength (some up to 1000MPa), high specific strength, excellent high and low-temperature performance (- 250 ℃~500 ℃) and fatigue resistance (fatigue limit is twice that of steel). The weight reduction effect produced by the application of titanium alloy fasteners will have a huge effect on improving the propulsion of aircraft and spacecraft, increasing the range, saving fuel, reducing launch costs, etc. in modern aircraft manufacturing, the connecting fasteners used by an aircraft range from hundreds of thousands to millions. Titanium alloy fasteners account for 90% of threaded fasteners. Titanium fasteners have become the most important "aerospace fasteners".

Titanium alloy fasteners

Titanium alloy fasteners have excellent corrosion resistance, especially its positive potential performance just matches with carbon fiber composites, which effectively prevents the galvanic corrosion of fasteners. Therefore, titanium fasteners can be used for the connection of titanium structures, aluminum structures,s, and even some composite materials. This feature can not be replaced by any other materials, which is also the rapid development of titanium fasteners.

Titanium has special stability in static or high-speed seawater because its corrosion resistance is better than all metals. In addition, the fasteners made of titanium alloy are very suitable for applications in submarines, warships, civilian ships, and desalination devices.

Titanium fasteners

Industrial field of highly corrosive environment

In the relevant facilities and equipment in the petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, electric power, and other industries, fasteners and connectors should not only bear a certain load but also be strongly corroded by a variety of acid and alkali media. The working conditions are very harsh. The use of titanium alloy fasteners is the best choice.

Because titanium has very strong corrosion resistance in high-temperature and wet chlorine environments. For example, the corrosion rate of titanium in normal temperature chlorine water is 0.000565mm/a; In chlorine water at 80 ℃, the corrosion rate is 0.00431mm/a; In 95% wet chlorine water, the corrosion rate is 0.00096mm/a. Therefore, titanium fasteners are the best alternative to stainless steel fasteners.
