4. Problems and prevention of titanium steel composite plate
In the production of titanium steel clad plates, the common quality problems are clad plate defects and welding defects. The former is primarily caused by a titanium layer's and steel layer's local surface cracks and insufficient bonding rate; the latter is mostly due to pores, cracks, partial penetration, and slag inclusion.
5. Prevention and control measures
Composite plate defect
1) Adhere to the incoming material re-inspection system, and the bonding condition of composite plates shall be inspected one by one. Focus on transition joints, flanges, etc. For the composite plate of titanium material without considering the strength, the flaw detection requires 100% continuous ultrasonic flaw detection within the range of 50mm round, and 200mm spacing defect detection will be applied to the remaining sections. 100% flaw detection for the rest.
2) When the plasticity of the composite plate is poor, it shall be re-annealed to eliminate stress, improve its performance and prevent defects in subsequent fabrication.
3) When it is necessary to bend the pull plate such as the drum and stamping head when the temperature is low, the flame shall preheat the bending part to prevent bubbles or cracks.
4) During the operations of gouging and drilling pipe holes, the blanking and drilling operations shall be processed from the titanium layer to the steel layer as far as possible to prevent the composite plate from tearing or forming cracks.
Welding defect
1) Argon with a purity of no less than 99.99% shall be used as shielding gas for welding the titanium layer. In addition, the welding wire is not allowed to have cracks and interlayers.
2) Before welding, thoroughly clean and prepare the workpiece's welding area. The base steel surface must be warmed with flame if the outside temperature is below 5 °C.
3) For titanium steel clad plate equipment, strip bonding is the titanium weld processing technique, which involves removing the titanium layer within 15 mm of the clad plate edge, welding the steel weld first, and then completely covering the steel weld with 50mm wide titanium strip, weld the titanium layer and protect it with argon.
4) For the micro-cracks on the surface of the composite plate, the defects must be removed before repair welding. Direct repair welding can be used for small cracks.
5) If the area is large, the material must be replaced. The problem can be fixed if the area is small. A smaller number of titanium rivets must be used to reinforce the nonbonding area.
