4. Zirconium tube applications: chemical industry, metal coating industry.
Even at very low concentrations, hydrofluoric acid quickly attacks zirconium tubes because it has no resistance to it. There are four types of corrosion-resistant zirconium alloys in the chemical industry: Zr702, zr704, zr705, and zr706, which are fit for different chemical media and conditions. The corrosion resistance of these four zirconium alloys is almost the same, but their mechanical properties are very different. Zr705 has twice the tensile strength of Zr702, for example. Zr705 is typically used for chemical equipment that needs to be extremely strong. Zr702 and Zr704 have stronger corrosion resistance than Zr705 and Zr706 in sulfuric acid that contains FeCl3, though. Zr706 has enough strength and high elongation and is generally used to produce heat exchangers.
The corrosion resistance of zirconium tubes to dilute sulfuric acid is very good, and the corrosion resistance in 50% NaOH solution is better than that of tantalum, so it has a broad future in the chemical industry. The 2% hafnium content has no significant effect on the corrosion resistance of zirconium, but the zirconium used as the coating material for the nuclear fuel element of the reactor should be separated from the hafnium.
