Titanium consumption of commercial aircraft of major airlines abroad in 2020

Mar 10, 2022

Titanium material and aviation coexist and prosper together. The aviation industry is an important market for titanium alloys. At present, about three-quarters of titanium in the world is used in aerospace and military products. According to the application status, high damage tolerance titanium (for fuselage) and high-temperature titanium (for engine) are the two main aspects of the future development .

Titanium material and aviation

1 .Fuselage

In addition to being used as general structural parts, assemblies, and fasteners, large titanium integral structural parts have been widely used. It can be roughly inferred from the order delivery, the consumption in the fuselage of various models, combined with the production rate and loss rate, that the total consumption of titanium material in the fuselage of commercial aircraft of Boeing and Airbus in 2020 is about 43000 tons.

1.1 Boeing

The consumption of titanium in the fuselage of Boeing's main commercial aircraft is shown in Table 1.

It can be roughly inferred from the order delivery, its consumption of fuselage of each model, combined with the finished product rate and loss rate, that the actual titanium consumption of fuselage of Boeing's commercial aviation market in 2020 is about 24000 tons, of which the consumption of B737 model is about 700 tons; B747 model is about 500 tons; B777 model is about 10000 tons; The consumption of B787 model is about 12000 tons.

2. Titanium Material for engine

About 30% of the structural mass of a modern turbine engine is titanium alloy. The earliest engine components using titanium are compressor blades. Large front-end fan blades of modern jet engines are also made of titanium material. It can be roughly inferred from the order delivery, its consumption of fuselage of various models, combined with the yield and loss rate, that the total titanium consumption of commercial aircraft engines of Boeing and Airbus in 2020 is about 19000 tons.

2.1 Boeing

The titanium consumption of Boeing's main commercial aircraft engines is shown in Table 3. It can be roughly inferred from the order delivery, its consumption of engines of various models, combined with the production rate and loss rate, that the actual titanium consumption of engines in Boeing's commercial aviation market in 2020 is about 8000 tons, of which the consumption of B737 model is about 1000 tons; The consumption of B747 model is about 600 tons; The consumption of B777 model is about 1400 tons; The consumption of B787 model is about 5000 tons.
