Products Description
A titanium dish head comprises three parts: a somewhat spherical shell, a circular arc edge, and a decent edge (short cylinder treatment). Due to the rapid change in curvature radius at the intersection of the spherical shell and folded edge, its mechanical properties are inferior to those of spherical and elliptical heads, folded edge, and straight edge.

Due to its shallow depth and little needs for stamping tools and dies, the titanium dished head is simple to produce. It is rarely used for force vessels and is only applied when low pressure, a reduction in head depth, or the absence of mold is necessary.

The use of spinning production technology has made it possible to make large-diameter elliptical heads with ease. Ellipsoidal heads are often used in medium and low-pressure vessels because of their overall good performance.
Similar to elliptical heads, titanium dished heads are often used heads in chemical equipment, however, due to their spherical shape, their geometric calculations are more difficult than elliptical heads and transition sections.

Production Process
1. Material cutting and panel assembly
Select the integral plate or spliced structure based on the head diameter:
For diameters ≤2000mm, whole plate cutting can be adopted;
When exceeding the plate width, splicing is required, typically performed with plasma cutting to avoid heat-affected zone contamination;
The butt welds must be performed by TIG welding, ensuring full penetration without pores or slag inclusions;
Grind the weld bead to flush with the base material after welding to prevent bulging caused by uneven friction during stamping.
2. Stamping and forming
Cold stamping is the primary method: GR2 generally does not undergo hot stamping, as high temperatures can lead to oxygen and nitrogen absorption, resulting in surface embrittlement;
Multi-pass forming: Large heads require 3–5 progressive stamping steps, with deformation controlled within a reasonable range to prevent cracking;
Wall thickness control: The maximum thinning rate after forming shall be ≤10%, with ultrasonic thickness measurement required for critical sections.
3. Heat treatment (depending on the forming method)
table
Forming Method | Heat Treatment Required | Treatment Type | Purpose
Cold stamping is stress-relief annealing to eliminate residual stress and improve dimensional stability
Hot stamping is a solid solution treatment to restore corrosion resistance and mechanical properties
Stress relief annealing parameters: 500–600°C, hold for 1–2 hours, then cool slowly;
Protective atmosphere: Heat treatment must be conducted in a vacuum or inert gas (such as argon) environment to prevent oxidation.
4. Surface Treatment and Finishing
Pickling: Remove the surface oxide layer after stamping, typically using a mixed acid solution of HF + HNO₃;
Polishing: Enhances surface smoothness to meet the high cleanliness requirements of industries such as pharmaceuticals and food;
Machining: Perform CNC turning on straight edge sections or connecting flanges to ensure alignment accuracy.
5. Quality Inspection
Non-destructive testing:
100% penetrant testing (PT) shall be performed on the weld zone, with no cracks or pores allowed;
Radiation testing (RT) or ultrasonic testing (UT) shall be performed when necessary.
Dimension Inspection:
The ovality error shall not exceed 1.5% of D (D being the diameter);
The diameter tolerance shall comply with standards such as GB/T 25198.
Mechanical Property Sampling: Tensile testing verifies whether yield strength and elongation meet the requirements of ASTM B28/B381.
What are the advantages of titanium dish heads?
As a key sealing component of high-end pressure vessels, titanium heads have demonstrated significant advantages in multiple industrial fields due to the unique properties of titanium material. The main advantages can be summarized into the following five core dimensions:
1, The perfect combination of lightweight and high-strength
Weight reduction of over 40%
The density of titanium is only 4.5 g/cm ³ (about 57% of steel), but its tensile strength is as high as 500-1000 MPa. Under the same pressure conditions, it can reduce weight by more than 40%, significantly reducing equipment load.
High specific strength characteristics
The specific strength (strength/density ratio) of titanium head is the highest among metal materials, twice that of carbon steel and six times that of aluminum alloy. It is particularly suitable for weight sensitive fields such as aerospace rocket fuel tanks and aircraft fairings.
2, Excellent corrosion resistance
Corrosion resistance of the entire scene
In highly corrosive media such as hydrochloric acid, wet chlorine gas, and seawater, the annual corrosion rate is 0.1mm/, to avoid pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking.
Self repair and oxidation film mechanism
The dense TiO ₂ oxide film generated on the surface can be automatically repaired after damage, with a lifespan of over 10 years in chemical reaction vessels and petrochemical storage tanks, reducing maintenance costs.

FAQ
Q: 1. How do you remove the oxide layer on the surface of the titanium dish head?
2. Sandblasting removal: Use the sandblasting method to remove the oxide layer from the titanium surface. It should be noted that when removing the oxide layer on the titanium surface, the appropriate method should be selected according to the specific situation, and the operation should be strictly carried out in accordance with the operating procedures to ensure safety and effect.
Q: 2. Titanium dish head implementation standards?
Q: 3. Why do titanium dish heads need hot forming?
Titanium products have excellent weight ratio, mechanical properties, and chemical stability, so they have been widely used in aviation, aerospace, shipbuilding, nuclear industry, biomedicine, and other fields. In the manufacturing process of titanium heads, it is necessary to enhance their plasticity and toughness through processing and heat treatment steps to improve their durability and ductility.
Hot forming is a common process in the manufacturing process of titanium heads. Hot forming refers to the plastic deformation of materials at high temperatures to change their shape and size. Hot forming can refine the grains of titanium materials, improve their plasticity and toughness, eliminate residual stress in the material, and improve the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the material.
