Vanadium V: 3.50~4.50%
Carbon C: ≤0.08%

The difference between Ti-6Al-4V(Gr23) ELI and Ti-6Al-4V(Gr5)
Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Extra Low Interstitial) and standard Ti-6Al-4V (also known as TC4) belong to the α+β dual phase titanium alloy, with the main components being approximately 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium, but the key difference lies in the control of interstitial element content. The ELI version significantly reduces the content of interstitial impurities such as oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, further improving the material's ductility and fracture toughness, especially suitable for long-term implantable medical scenarios that require extremely high safety and reliability.
The specific differences are as follows:
1. Chemical composition differences
Ti-6Al-4V: Oxygen content is usually ≤ 0.20%, hydrogen ≤ 0.015%, nitrogen ≤ 0.05%
Ti-6Al-4V ELI: Oxygen content is strictly controlled at ≤ 0.13%, hydrogen ≤ 0.0125%, nitrogen ≤ 0.05%, in compliance with medical standards such as ASTM F136. Lower interstitial elements help reduce the formation of brittle phases and improve material purity.
2. Mechanical performance
Standard Ti-6Al-4V has high strength (tensile strength ≥ 895 MPa) and is suitable for aerospace structural components and engine parts
Although the ELI version has a slight decrease in strength, it has better plasticity (higher elongation), stronger resistance to fatigue and crack propagation, and is more suitable for human implants that can withstand complex loads
3. Application areas focus on different aspects
Ti-6Al-4V: widely used in industrial fields such as aircraft landing gear, compressor blades, and high-end sports equipment
Ti-6Al-4V ELI: Designed specifically for medical implants, commonly used in artificial joints, spinal fixation systems, dental implants, and other devices that require long-term in vivo retention
4. Biocompatibility optimization

The chemical composition shall conform to GR23 grade in ASTM F136, and the H content in pure titanium, Gr5, and Gr5 ELI shall not be greater than 0.010%. During the re-inspection by the Demander, the allowable deviation of chemical composition shall comply with the provisions of ASTM F136.

No cracks, air holes, metal or non-metallic inclusions, or other visible defects are allowed on the transverse macrostructure of medical titanium alloy bars. The transverse microstructure of pure titanium bar in an annealing state shall be uniform, and the grain size shall not be lower than Grade 5. The macrostructure of medical titanium alloy bars in the annealed state shall conform to A1~A9.
The ingots used for the production and processing of materials shall be melted in a vacuum consumable arc furnace or EB furnace plus a vacuum consumable arc furnace, and the melting times shall not be less than two.
As surgical implant materials, titanium and titanium alloys have many advantages, such as low density, high strength, good toughness, good biocompatibility, non-toxic, low elastic modulus, good corrosion resistance, low X-ray absorption, etc., so they play an increasingly important role in medical metal materials.
