6. What is EB and VAR smelting?
The smelting methods of titanium and titanium alloys include vacuum consumable furnace (VAR), electron beam cold bed furnace (EB), vacuum plasma arc and vacuum plasma beam smelting (PA), and cold bed furnace smelting (CHM). Among them, the first two are the preferred equipment for smelting titanium and titanium alloy.
7. Difference between EB and VAR smelting
There are many VAR furnaces in China, while there are relatively few EB furnaces. The characteristics of VAR method are low energy consumption, fast melting speed, and good quality reproducibility. The ingots melted by VAR method have good crystal structure and uniform chemical composition. Usually, finished ingots need to be melted using the VAR method. It needs to be remelted at least twice.
EB furnace can not only produce round ingots, but also rectangular ingots for direct rolling, eliminating the need for forging and billet opening, thereby greatly reducing metal loss and lowering costs, and producing pure titanium coils and other products at ultra-low costs. However, it is difficult to control the composition when producing titanium alloys in EB furnace. For metals such as Al and Cr with lower vapor pressure than pure titanium, their volatilization is large and constantly changes with operating conditions, such as the volatilization amount (mass fraction) of Al reaching 1.5%. Therefore, a certain level of proficiency in operation and the process of running in are required.
