Why are custom titanium flanges more expensive?

1. Higher Material Costs and Waste
Titanium itself is expensive: As a rare metal, titanium's smelting and processing costs are far higher than common metals like stainless steel. Therefore, the raw material cost of titanium flanges is inherently higher.

Non-standard dimensions lead to material waste: Custom flanges are "non-standard" products, and factories don't have ready-made blanks. For small-batch orders, titanium plates are usually cut directly, resulting in "core" scrap, which is included in the cost.

2. High Processing Difficulty and Technical Barriers
Low machining efficiency: Machining titanium alloys requires high-performance machine tools and cutting tools, resulting in processing efficiency far lower than ordinary steel.

High processing difficulty: Titanium alloys have high hardness, causing rapid tool wear during machining. Simultaneously, its poor thermal conductivity (approximately 1/7 that of steel) makes it difficult to dissipate the high temperatures generated during cutting, affecting not only processing quality but also shortening tool life. Furthermore, titanium is easily contaminated at high temperatures, further increasing processing difficulty and cost.

High Risks in Thin-Walled Part Machining: If a custom flange is thinner than the standard one, it is prone to "trembling" during machining. This not only damages the cutting tools and affects the product's appearance and surface finish, but also increases machining time.

3. Lack of Economies of Scale
Inability to Mass Produce: Standard flanges have readily available molds and mature production lines, allowing for large-scale production to reduce unit costs. Custom flanges, however, lack readily available blanks and cannot be mass-produced.

Mold and Preparation Costs: Unless the order volume is very large, it is not worthwhile for manufacturers to invest heavily in developing dedicated forging molds (dies) for a single custom order.

4. Complexity of Design and Processes
Complex processes increase machining time: If the flange machining process required by the customer is complex (such as special sealing surfaces, irregular structures, etc.), it will consume a lot of machining time, directly increasing product costs.

In summary, the high price of custom titanium flanges is due to the combination of factors that drive up costs: "expensive materials," "highly difficult machining," and "lack of economies of scale." However, despite the high initial investment, the excellent corrosion resistance, lightweight and high strength of titanium flanges make them a more cost-effective choice in the long run, especially in special working conditions such as chemical and aerospace applications.
