5. Corrosion protection of titanium tube sheet

When manufacturing tubular heat exchangers, the welding between the tube sheet and the tube is usually manual arc welding. Numerous defects, including depressions, pores, slag inclusions, and uneven weld stress distribution, are present in the weld shape. The titanium tube sheet is usually in contact with industrial cooling water when in use, salts, gases, impurities, and microorganisms in industrial cooling water will constitute the corrosion of the weld and tube sheet. That is what we usually call electrochemical corrosion.

Industrial water contains a variety of ions and dissolved oxygen, whether it is freshwater or seawater. The morphology of metal corrosion is significantly influenced by variations in the concentrations of oxygen and chloride ions. The complexity of the metal structure will also affect the morphology of corrosion. Therefore, pitting and crevice corrosion are the main causes of the corrosion of welds between tube sheets and row pipes.

The major factors affecting the corrosion of tube sheets are:

(1) Medium concentration and composition: the influence of concentration is different. For instance, the severity of corrosion increases with increasing hydrochloric acid concentration. The corrosion of stainless steel and carbon steel is the most serious in sulfuric acid with a concentration of about 50%, but the corrosion decreases rapidly when the concentration increases to more than 60%.

(2) Impurities: Dangerous impurities like sulfur ions, cyanide ions, chloride ions, ammonia ions, etc. can occasionally cause severe corrosion.

(3) Temperature: When the temperature increases by 10 ℃, the corrosion rate increases by about 1 ~ 3 times, corrosion is a chemical reaction, but there are exceptions.

(4) PH value: the smaller the pH value, the greater the metal corrosion usually.

(5) Flow rate: the greater the flow rate, the more serious the corrosion is in most cases.
